CITIZEN VOICES® Majority support mandate to bury Northern Pass lines - 68 participants

Mar 31, 2014

Recently, the NH Senate held a public hearing on HB 569, which would require the state Site Evaluation Committee to give preference to any plan or project, including Northern Pass, that bury electrical lines and place them along public rights of way. On March 31, Citizens Count, NH’s Live Free or Die Alliance decided to put the issue to its Facebook members, posting the question, “Should NH mandate burial of the Northern Pass transmission line?”

What Participants Said

Yes: An overwhelming majority, at 64% of ‘yes or no’ respondents, were in favor of mandating burial of the Northern Pass transmission line.

  • “Draping ugly lines across the picturesque scenes of NH's greatest vistas is an idea straight out of the book of bad ideas.”

No: The minority of ‘yes or no’ respondents, at 36%, were opposed to mandating burial of the Northern Pass transmission line.

  • “No. It’s just a power line.”

Other: As noted above, 42% of those participating did not give a ‘yes or no’ response, instead addressing their comments to related questions and issues. These included:

  • "It doesn't matter to me what you do with transmission lines. The problem is that we are unable to be self sufficient in the first place."
  • "Why should NH customers be paying for this at all? The Northern Pass project is to bring electricity to southern New England, not NH."
