On Tuesday, June 7 the Cambridge City Council voted to change the name of Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples' Day.
Cambridge Vice Mayor Marc McGovern supported the vote, and said explorer Christopher Columbus was "the first person to start the genocide that took place in this part of the world."
Several other cities have voted to change the name of the holiday, such as Portland, Oregon and Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Supporters of Columbus Day argue that it is a slight against Italian Americans to strip the explorer of his holiday.
Others argue that "political correctness" is a poor reason to change the name of a holiday that is celebrated in many countries.
