Following the defeat of his two-casino proposal last year, Sen. Lou D’Allesandro has sponsored a bill (SB 551) that would create a single casino with video lottery and table gaming, to be located at Rockingham Park in Salem, NH. A tax of 35% of gross slot machine revenue and 18% of gross table game revenue would go to the state, with dedicated portions of the funds going to addiction prevention programs and to Salem and neighboring communities.

Gov. Maggie Hassan has previously signaled her support for a bill authorizing a single casino in New Hampshire.

Those in favor of the proposal argue it would bring much-needed revenue to the state, create jobs, and increase tourism. They argue that concerns over increases in crime and addiction are overblown.

Opponents counter that gambling revenues will not solve the state’s budget problems, which would be better addressed by controlling spending. They point to the potential for increased crime and gambling addiction problems.
