On Labor Day Republican Executive Councilor Chris Sununu announced he will run for Governor in 2016.

His announcement outlined some priorities: no new taxes or fees, increased funding for charter schools, and initiatives to encourage business growth.

Councilor Sununu received significant media coverage this summer after voting to defund Planned Parenthood in New Hampshire. Sununu identifies as pro-choice, but said he could not support Planned Parenthood after controversial videos appeared to show Planned Parenthood employees discussing the sale of fetal tissue.

The New Hampshire Democratic Party released a statement after Sununu’s announcement criticizing his votes against Planned Parenthood and a southern New Hampshire commuter rail.

In a statement New Hampshire Republican State Committee Chairman Jennifer Horn praised Sununu, but also noted that other Republicans – such as Rep. Frank Edelblut – may join the race.

Gov. Maggie Hassan has not said if she will run for reelection in 2016.
