At a stump speech in Hampton this week, Gov. Maggie Hassan announced her support for an increase in the federal minimum wage from $7.25 to $12 per hour. The statement put her at odds with the official Democratic party agenda, which is pushing for a $15 per hour minimum.

The text of Hassan’s Innovate NH 2.0 economic plan, of which the minimum wage increase forms one part, wrote that the change would serve “to help ensure that more people are included in our economic growth and to help our economy by putting more money in the pockets of hard-working people.”

Critics counter that a minimum wage increase would discourage employment growth and put undue burden on small businesses. Others contend that $12 an hour does not constitute a living wage, and argue that the minimum should be higher.
