This year many gun rights advocates lobbied Gov. Maggie Hassan over HB 582, a bill that would allow residents to carry concealed firearms without a license.  Hassan vetoed that bill, and on June 16 the House of Representatives sustained her veto.

This week Hassan vetoed a lesser-known gun rights bill, SB 336.  That bill would have required law enforcement to issue a concealed carry permit to any person, so long as that person is not explicitly forbidden to carry a concealed firearm.  Right now law enforcement have some discretion to decide if someone is "suitable" to carry a concealed firearm.

Bill supporters argued that the current law allows police to unjustly discriminate and deny citizens their constitutional right to bear arms.

Gov. Hassan disagreed, saying, "Our permitting process gives an important oversight role to local law enforcement, while also allowing for appeals through appropriate channels."
