On Wednesday, January 10 the state House of Representatives will vote on two marijuana legalization bills.

The first bill, HB 1675, would legalize and tax recreational marijuana use for adults age eighteen and older.

The second bill, HB 1694, would legalize and tax recreational marijuana use for adults age twenty-one and older.

The majority of the Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee voted against both bills.

“The committee feels that in light of the ongoing opioid crisis and the information given to the task force about how a young man went from marijuana use to prescription drugs and on to heroin addition, that now is not the time to legalize a drug that is illegal under federal statutes,” wrote committee member Rep. Dick Marston

However, a minority of the committee supports HB 1694.

“The message this legislation brings to citizens of all ages is that we will no longer tolerate marijuana coming from the hands of callous drug dealers who tempt customers into more dangerous substances (as happens now),” wrote Rep. Geoffrey Hirsch.  “Rather, NH will provide tested, regulated, and labeled marijuana products adults can understand and trust.”

Last year the House passed a bill to establish a study commission for marijuana legalization, but the Senate killed the bill.
