In an event on June 30th, U.S. Rep. Ann McLane Kuster emphasized the importance of the manufacturing industry to economic growth in New England.

Kuster acted as keynote speaker at the presentation of “Advanced to Advantageous: The Case for New England’s Manufacturing Revolution”, a report commissioned by the New England Council. The report was created by Deloitte Consulting based on interviews with 150 economic, political and education leaders from throughout the region.

The study highlighted the importance of advanced manufacturing in New England, which includes biotechnology, complex electronics, aeronautics and defense. According to 2012 U.S. Census data, 64.55% of manufacturing jobs in NH are considered ‘advanced’, with a median annual wage of $70,000 to $80,000.  However, the report noted that manufacturers have difficulty filling skilled positions, calling the need for action regarding education and attracting qualified workers to New England the most significant problem inhibiting growth in the industry.

Kuster made a push for legislation that would facilitate partnerships between businesses and community colleges, as well as the proposed extension of commuter rail service to Nashua or Manchester.
