Lottery revenues break record

New Hampshire Lottery sales exceeded $300 million this year, a new record for the granite state. 

That translates into more that $75 million in education funding. The lottery accounts for 3.3% of total state revenue. 

The increase in lottery sales this year was due primarily to Powerball tickets. Powerball decreased the odds of winning the jackpot last year in order to create bigger prizes that attract ticket buyers. 

Supporters of the lottery argue that it provides much-needed school funding, helping New Hampshire stay income and sales tax-free.

Opponents argue that the lottery amounts to a regressive tax, since low income residents are far more likely to buy lottery tickets.

$300 million equals about $225 in ticket sales per capita.
