According the latest Granite State Poll sponsored by WMUR, 54% of New Hampshire residents support legalizing marijuana for recreational use.

Support is strongest in the North Country, where 71% support legalizing marijuana.  Support is lowest on the Seacoast, where only 34% support legalization.

Support is even higher for decriminalization, which takes away the criminal penalty for possessing small amounts of marijuana.  The poll found 63% support decriminalization of marijuana.

Once again, support for decriminalization is strongest in the North Country (75%) and lowest on the Seacoast (45%).

The state Senate is scheduled to vote on a marijuana decriminalization bill next Thursday, June 3.  The Senate Judiciary Committee has recommended killing the bill.

The poll surveyed 567 randomly selected adults by land-line and cellular telephone.  38% of survey respondents were registered Republicans, 37% were registered Democrats, and 25% were independents.
