Sen. Sharon Carson is the primary sponsor of a bill that would require health class curriculum to include cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training.

Formal CPR certification would not be required.

The American Heart Association supports CPR training in schools. According to their website, "Sudden Cardiac Arrest is a leading cause of death in the U.S. - but when ordinary people, not just doctors and EMTs, are equipped with the skills to perform CPR, the survival rate can double, or even triple."

According to the Department of Education, a CPR training kit costs about $600. School districts would have to purchase such a kit if they do not already have CPR training equipment.

Some argue that CPR should be offered as an elective, but local school districts should have the final say over any curriculum decisions.
