Mandatory paid sick leave?

Rep. Mary Stuart Gile (D-Concord) is sponsoring a 2015 bill that would require employers to offer employees paid sick leave.

Although the text of the bill is not yet public, Gile says the requirement would apply to large employers who do not offer any paid time off.  Full time workers would be granted 40 hours sick leave, and part time workers would earn sick leave on a prorated basis.

Supporters of mandatory sick leave argue that it increases overall productivity.  Employees without sick leave, on the other hand, are likely to come to work sick, spreading infection.

Opponents of mandatory sick leave argue that the cost of the benefit will lead to higher prices or decreased employee hours.  Opponents also argue that employees with sick leave are still just as likely to come to work sick.
