More snow = more snow days

News Date

As the snow continues to pile up in New Hampshire, so do the number of snow days. And that's presenting a dilemma to school districts across the state.

The state requires 180 days of school each year and there's a requirement for a certain amount of instructional time. When a snow day occurs, hours are subtracted from the total required for each student. This means students must make up those hours in order to fulfill state requirements. Most school districts have a certain number of snow days built into their academic calendar. The problem becomes when the districts have exceeded that number.

Some districts add minutes to the school day to try to make up time. Other districts start tacking on days to the scheduled end of the school year to make up the time. Still others are contemplating whether to reduce April vacation.

And it's not just students who wrestle with snow days. Workers too face the prospect of not getting paid if their work closes because of a snow storm.
