According to a Concord Monitor report, New Hampshire veterans seeking an appointment through the VA are served faster than in other states.  However, only 26% of New Hampshire veterans seek health care through the VA system.  That's significantly lower than the national average of 42%.

There are many reasons New Hampshire veterans may seek care outside the VA.  Veterans may not know they are eligible, may want to choose their doctors through private insurance, or may not be able to travel for care.

New Hampshire is the only state without a full-service VA hospital.  There is a VA medical clinic in Manchester, and outpatient clinics in Conway, Keene, Littleton, Portsmouth, Somersworth, and Tilton.

The New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is launching a campaign to help doctors notify veterans of their options in the VA system.

"Our goal is to steer them to health care, whether that’s the VA or non-VA," said Jo Moncher, head of community-based military programs at DHHS. "The responsibility for serving our military and their families belongs to all of us."
