Paper ballots keep NH vote secure

Donald Trump has claimed several times that the election system is rigged, and on Wednesday night's debate he said he may or may not accept the final results in November.

New Hampshire's reliance on paper ballots, however, makes it very difficult to falsify election results in the Granite State. None of New Hampshire's voting machines are connected to the internet, which prevents hacking. Some smaller communities even count paper ballots by hand.

New Hampshire similarly does not allow online voter registration.

One concern remains: in-person voter fraud, in which a person votes in a district where he or she is not domiciled. New Hampshire's voter ID law requires voters to verify their identity at the polls, however. If a voter does not have ID, he or she must sign an affidavit and have a picture taken.

The state has aggressively prosecuted some cases of voter fraud, although the cases are relatively few.

A WMUR Granite State Poll conducted in July found that 83% of New Hampshire residents are confident that their vote in the previous election was counted accurately.
