Senate tables business tax cuts

This week the Senate tabled business tax cats, but Republican Senators plan to reconsider the tax cuts when they receive a state budget proposal from the House.

"To ignore the fact that we have an uncompetitive corporate tax rate is nothing worse than the most myopic short sightedness that we could have," said Sen. Jeb Bradley (R-Wolfeboro).

Gov. Maggie Hassan (D) opposes the tax cuts.

"I understand the attractiveness of these proposals, but they would create significant holes in future budgets with a significant cost to our people, our businesses and our economy," Hassan said in an address to the Greater Concord Chamber of Commerce.

The debate over business taxes echoes the debate over much of the next state budget.  Republicans generally want to cut taxes and fees, but Democrats - and even some Republicans - argue that cuts would hurt state services that are critical to a healthy economy.
