Should NH legalize firecrackers?

On Thursday, February 9 the New Hampshire Senate passed a bill to legalize firecrackers in New Hampshire. 

Many types of fireworks are currently legal in New Hampshire, including fountains, wheels and Roman candles. However, firecrackers, rockets, missiles, and devices designed solely to produce smoke can't be sold or possessed inside the Granite State. Only adults over age 21 can buy or possess fireworks. Residents should also check with local officials, as some New Hampshire cities and towns have local ordinances banning the use of fireworks. Supporters of the bill to legalize firecrackers argue that firecrackers are no more dangerous than fireworks. They note that firecrackers are available for purchase in Maine, which puts New Hampshire retailers at a disadvantage.

The New Hampshire Association of Fire Chiefs and the New Hampshire Fire Marshal’s Office support the ban on firecrackers, however. Individuals may be more likely to injure themselves with firecrackers because it is possible to light firecrackers while holding them in your hand.

Then-Governor Maggie Hassan vetoed a bill to legalize firecrackers last year.
