The bald eagle has made a comeback in recent decades, prompting New Hampshire wildlife officials to consider removing it from its list of threatened species.

According to the New Hampshire Audubon, the bald eagle population in 2015 was the highest seen in decades. The Associated Press reports there were 51 eaglets born in New Hampshire in 2016.

Supporters of removing the bald eagle from the New Hampshire threatened species list argue that it is no longer necessary nor are the associated expenditures. The eagle was removed from the federal endangered species list in 2007, after decades of effort to boost the population.

Opponents counter that removing the bald eagle from the list is premature and contend that continued monitoring, nest protection and outreach is necessary to ensure its numbers can stabilize across the state.
