A new distracted driving law, passed in the 2014 legislative session and signed into law by Gov. Hassan, bans hand-held cellphone use while driving beginning July 1, 2015.

On that date, penalties for driving while operating a hand-held electronic device will include fines of $100 for the first offense, $250 for a second offense, and $500 for subsequent offenses within 24 months.

To spread the word about the implementation of the new law, transportation officials are planning an education campaign that will include a public service announcement, website, and educational materials for state residents.

Devices prohibited from use under the law include hand-held cellphones, GPS navigation systems, tablets, and iPods. Residents are encouraged to use Bluetooth or hands-free devices.
