About guns on campus

Right now the university system has a rule that bans firearms on campus. Students that own a firearm must store the gun with campus police.

NH ranks 13th for fewest firearm deaths

According to the most recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, New Hampshire has the 13th lowest firearm death rate in the U.S.

There were 132 firearm-related deaths in New Hampshire in 2016, a rate of 9.3 per 100,000 population.

All of New England has a low firearm death rate. Massachusetts has the lowest rate, 3.4 deaths per 100,000 population. Rhode Island came in second (3.1), Connecticut came in fifth (4.6), Maine came in ninth (8.3), and Vermont came in fifteenth (11.1).

The recent shooting in Sutherland Springs, Texas has again brought the gun control debate front and center. As local politicians have expressed their condolences, some have also taken the opportunity to call for more widespread gun legislation. New Hampshire’s US Senator Maggie Hassan said, “As we mourn for the victims we must also finally take action to prevent these senseless acts of gun violence.”

In light of Vegas shooting, stricter gun laws?

The mass shooting in Las Vegas this week has prompted gun control advocates to call for stricter laws on the sale and possession of firearms.

Most of these proposals are at the federal level. For example, U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan is sponsoring a federal bill "to close a loophole that allows semi-automatic weapons to be easily modified to fire at the rate of automatic weapons." 

Would you support allowing teachers in your school district to carry concealed guns on campus?

Earlier this week, Colorado's Hanover school district voted in favor of allowing staff and teachers to carry concealed firearms while at school. The district joins several across the country that have authorized similar measures in recent years.

Those wishing to carry a weapon will need to apply and receive training.
