Other, 2012

"Well, ladies and gentlemen it's 2012, 50 years after the beginning of the women's liberation movement and the pill and 40 years after Roe v. Wade. Across the country, the conservative reactionaries of the Republican Party believe it's time to initiate a pre-emptive war on women's rights. These attacks are aimed at abortion, contraception and Planned Parenthood. These assaults include the invasion of women's bodies by imperious fiat, perpetrated by those who claim to be champions of the people against the intrusion of big government. Gorge Orwell rolls over in his grave. 'Big Brother' has gone beyond being in your house; he's in your body. And these are the people who are against universal health care Planned Parenthood is targeted because that organization acts as a women's health care clearinghouse, providing information concerning abortion, birth control, STDs and overall health care for men as well as women. Planned Parenthood presents informative sex education for teens, adults and educators. It provides the sex counseling that all parents should convey to their inquisitive teens. How astute can legislators be who assume that they can legislate morality? There are some who bring God into the fray. How deluded are religions that think edicts will prevail over human nature? Such vaporous tactics have not and will not ever be efficacious. Guess what? God is not a tyrant; he gives us free will. It is our responsibility to choose our actions; however, we shall have to give account for them. I believe that abortion is a legal right but a moral wrong. It's morally wrong because it fails the main tenet of the 'Kantian categorical imperative,' which states that humans should act in a manner that can be universalized. Abortions can't be performed universally because our species would die off. If abortion is the problem, contraception is the answer. Let us educate ourselves to avoid unwanted pregnancies. Sorry, Catholicism, the rhythm method is a pipe dream. The rhythm of young love for newlyweds does not coincide with the rhythm you are proposing. Effective contraceptive practices will preclude the need to terminate the lives of otherwise viable entities, i.e., baby humans. Instead of misguided neocons running around with a fervent desire to re-establish the dark ages of the 1950s, when abortions were performed by back-room mechanics, perhaps we can take a humane, pragmatic approach that is infused with realism in lieu of hysteria."
