New York last month became the latest state to ban e-cigarettes and vaping in indoor public areas where traditional tobacco cigarettes are prohibited, such as restaurants, bars and other workplaces. In doing so, the state put e-cigarettes in the same class of public health hazard as regular tobacco cigarettes. Read more about this issue

What Participants Said

No: 162 Citizens were opposed to a ban on indoor vaping.

  • “I would say let the establishment decide whether they want to ban them or not.”
  • “No… It's vapor, not smoke. It's not like cigarettes despite what the uneducated masses believe. Making vaping less accessible contributes to keeping more people hooked on tobacco.”
  • “No. People should just try having some decency without a law telling them to.”

Yes: 143 In favor of a ban on indoor vaping.

  • “Yes, absolutely. Keep your harmful toxins to yourself, please.”
  • “Yes. Vaping is not without its health risks and [users] should not be allowed to place others at risk.”
  • “Should be treated just the same a cigarettes.  Both habits are disgusting.”

  • Smoking: “Quit smoking. Both my parents died of COPD – destroyed lungs.”
  • Health concerns: “If people would just figure out all you have to do is vape clean organic uncured tobacco from an atomizer with no carbon monoxide (or very little), all would be well.”

While I personally prefer not to stand in a cloud of strawberry-scented vapor, I don't think it is the government's place to decide whether or not patrons of various establishments should be allowed to vape. Rather, establishment owners should exercise their right to set rules about what is permitted on their property.
