Should the state continue to use liquid de-icers, such as brine, to clear winter roads?
The state Senate is considering HB 1651, a bill to form a study committee on the use of liquid de-icers and rock salt on New Hampshire roads.
Right now the state Department of Transportation uses the liquid de-icer brine – a salt water solution – as a pre-treatment on roads before a storm. Brine prevents snow from forming a bond with the road and melts ice and snow faster than regular rock salt.
Department of Transportation officials also say that since liquid de-icers are more effective, they reduce the overall use of salt.
Some environmentalists counter that brine has such a high salt content that it does more damage than regular rock salt.
Liquid de-icers are also more damaging to cars than regular rock salt.
