"Public funding of abortion is one of the thorniest social and moral issues we face. While I start from a 'right to life' position, I do not believe all pregnancy terminations are wrong or immoral. When they are warranted (e.g., rape/incest, severe health complications for the mother and/or developing child), they should be a safe and legal option. After the first trimester, what 'reality' are we talking about? This is not just a cluster of cells, but a developing 'individual' with a brain stem, heart beat, responsive to maternal stimulation, etc., and so we need some strong objective justification for terminating that pregnancy, especially if it is done in a publicly funded health facility. Perhaps at 3 person publically certified and appointed panel would be appropriate. Just as importantly, we need to offer women a real choice (vs. economic coercion that makes abortion the only viable option) to bring the pregnancy to term – affordable healthcare that includes pre & post-natal care, paid family leave, affordable daycare, a livable wage so that only one parent need work to support the family, etc. Women and families need real social and economic options when it comes to this most difficult of decisions."
