Do you support the “Education Freedom Account” program, which gives students access to the per-pupil share of state school funding to spend on private school or home school expenses?
"I am opposed to taking money away from our public schools, weakening their abilities to appropriately educate our students. The EFA has expanded tremendously jeopardizing our public schools, giving much money to 'private schools' with teachers who aren't accredited and schools that aren't accountable. Those schools don't want students with special needs, for example - yet by drawing huge amounts of money from public schools, our public school systems are weakened and I fear our students aren't served as well as they need and deserve. Traditional private schools have funding mechanisms (scholarships, loans, etc. for student aid) to make attendance at those schools more affordable. That's a system that works without taking money from public schools. It is wrong that current law now allows sizable money amounts even to wealthy families and/or families with multiple children taken from public schools to send to 'private' schools that are not accountable with teachers who aren't appropriately trained. The EFA program is far too broad and detrimental to our public schools and all the students who attend."Other| Read My Position

Should New Hampshire’s anti-discrimination law allow segregation based on biological sex in some settings, such as bathrooms and locker rooms?
"I support certain situations (locker rooms and teenage sports) when segregation is valuable. My record shows my fairness in advocating for trans individuals. In high school sports, I support restrictions. Locker rooms are problematic. What we have started at the State House is worthwhile - as of this year, we now have bathrooms for male, female, 'others' (trans and gays or people who prefer a single bathroom). Our new Oyster River Middle School has single bathrooms for all. This eliminates problems and respects the privacy of individuals."Against| Read My Position

Should New Hampshire ban abortions during the first trimester (e.g. after 6 weeks gestation)?
"I am pro-choice - please refer to my record. I have thoughtfully voted for years. I have worked openly on the abortion issue for years (especially on the House Judiciary Committee) - it is rare, but does sometimes happen that there are catastrophic circumstances late in pregnancy - whether for the life of the mother or due to devastatingly tragic circumstances for the fetus and on these very rare situations, no one 'wants' to do any abortion, but due to the extreme conditions a late term abortion is performed in a hospital with physician(s) and most carefully (and sadly) performed."Against| Read My Position

Should NH add an income tax on earned income?
"I don't support just any income tax - there was a time, years ago, when Jeanne Shaheen was Governor, the 'Hager-Below' bipartisan income tax, after considerable work and study, passed the House on a voice vote (many voices included, finally in support) and lost in the Senate by one vote. That is the only income tax I have supported over the years. It was quite fair to all - a plan like that is one I might support now depending on fairness, wording, public support, etc. In the current environment there won't be any discussions and plans coming forward for an income tax. There will come a time when residents and the legislature will, hopefully, be more open to exploring the right taxes. In my experience as a legislator, there was a time, but not recently."Other| Read My Position

"I represent many business owners who have said they paid what they do feeling this tax is actually 'managed well' with the state adjusting as necessary - They do NOT want an increase in business taxes because higher taxes will 'drive away' businesses or discourage new businesses from coming to NH."For| Read My Position

"For too long we've had zoning that limits too many opportunities for needed housing development. "We need to give greater focus to renewable energy sources: geothermal, solar, wind. I know our current Governor and others want more nuclear development. I strongly support other forms of renewable energy. "I believe the I&D tax was too preferential - not just 'wealthy' people paid it, but many people of average income, including retirees of rather modest income, paid it. "I voted for the statewide school property tax (years ago) which isn't great, but helps. I understand property taxes but the burden under the current method is now too high for many. "I will need to see details/exact wording of legislation regarding specific regulations for home-growing of marijuana. I have long-supported medical use of marijuana and all the states surrounding NH allow recreational use. 'The devil's in the details,' so to move forward (and we should and will at something) it was important using beneficial wording for safe practices with appropriate regulations which are fair. Licensing and private retail locations are important for multiple reasons and we ought to use the models that have not only worked in our neighboring states, but benefit NH residents. We've been working on state-run cannabis stories and, again, have seen where there are flaws or areas needing attention. Should New Hampshire require new voters to provide proof of U.S. citizenship, such as a birth certificate or passport, when registering to vote?
"I know NH traditionally has encouraged easier (but fair) access to voting. There are extremely rare cases of 'voter fraud' - putting further restriction on voter rights violates what we stand for and makes it harder for voters by discouraging the privilege of voting. For first time registrations proof of residence has worked here in NH for a very long time. Access to passports or birth certificates proving citizenship for some individuals can be a big hurdle and hinder their ability to vote - ex. elderly or infirm individuals or even those who don't drive, can find proving citizenship too difficult. Again - I don't believe there has been any problem in NH with a non-citizen attempting to vote."Against| Read My Position

Should New Hampshire allow at least 10% of students in each school district to enroll in a different public school, regardless of where they live?
"I don't like the concept of quotas such as 10%. School districts know how many students they can handle and it should be up to them to determine populations from outside their districts. For the emotional health of students, one needs to consider the environment of moving some districts from their current known environment, as well as follow students."For| Read My Position

"Local districts know best what their specific needs are - This fall voters, under a new law, will vote whether or not to cap local school district budgets. "I believe in gun safety - I strongly support background checks and restricting people with known/diagnosed mental illnesses. In domestic violence cases, for example, the removal of guns from a volatile home environment is imperative."
