Christensen told WMUR she filed to run as an independent solely to delay the Merrimack special election until April 13. She said, "I have no intention of running. I’m just preventing the possibility of having the general election on Feb. 23 and then having a second election for the town offices and school committee in April. ... I’m doing it for the good of the town, to save the town $20,000 to $25,000 by not being required to hold a second election, and saving the town clerk, and myself, as moderator, a lot of additional work."
