Debate over “no weapons” sign
State Rep. Ed Comeau is protesting a plan to post signs in the Governor Wentworth Regional School District. The signs read:
You are on school property
Alcohol prohibited
Drugs prohibited
No smoking or vaping
No weapons
“That is the most irresponsible thing to stick on the outside of a school, advertising to everyone that everyone in that area is unarmed and defenseless,” said Comeau.
In a Facebook post Comeau added that citizens with a concealed carry license are allowed to carry firearms on school property, and this sign could cause confusion.
On the other hand, state law requires a one-year expulsion for any student who brings a firearm to school.
The schools are also served by an armed resource officer. Any civilian carrying a firearm on school property is not a trained police officer, and could be misidentified as an attacker in a school shooting scenario.
