There is one gun rights bill left in the legislature this year. The bill, HB 84, was written to expand the rights of gun owners to carry a loaded long gun in a vehicle.

The House amended the bill to only allow a loaded long gun in a parked motorhome.

The Senate amended the bill to also allow a loaded long gun in the open bed of a pickup truck.

Now a committee of representatives and senators must work together to draft a final version of the bill.

Current state law prohibits carrying a loaded long gun or cocked crossbow in any vehicle. The law is intended to prevent poaching from a vehicle.

While debating HB 84, some lawmakers also expressed concern about the safety of driving with a loaded long gun.

On the other hand, Rep. Mark Proulx, the sponsor of HB 84, testified that hunters have received tickets for just leaning a loaded long gun against a car when they return from a hunting trip.

Others argue that the law against transporting a loaded long gun is a violation of Second Amendment rights.

Do you think the state should limit the possession of loaded long guns in vehicles? Share your opinion in the comments below.
