HB 132 (2025)
Revise requirement that relatives support a poor family member before local welfare
This bill became law.
Eliminates a law that requires capable family members to support poor relatives before that relative is eligible for local welfare. This bill refers to RSA 165:19.
The House amended the bill to more narrowly eliminate the legal requirement for a relative with means to be imprisoned for 60-90 days for refusing to provide aid to an indigent relative. Towns and cities could still seek reimbursement from a relative.
The House and Senate passed different versions of this bill, but a conference committee of legislators agreed to a final version that allows towns and cities to seek reimbursement from relatives without the threat of imprisonment.
