HB 1432 (2024)
Make fraudulent use of deepfakes illegal, allow lawsuits
This bill became law.
Last updated 2025-01-29 12:55 pm
Summary:
Establishes the crime of fraudulent use of deepfakes, sets penalties, and allows lawsuits. For example, this bill allows someone to sue if a deepfake video using their likeness caused them harm.
As introduced, the bill also prohibited the use of deepfake recordings to advocate for or against a candidate or policy. The House removed that part of the bill. However, the amended bill prohibits lobbying by anyone who is convicted of the fraudulent use of deepfakes.
