HB 1492 (2026)
Revise towing laws
This bill did not become law.
Authorizes the Department of Safety to oversee and set maximum fees for towing from state highways and establishes an administrative appeals process for disputed charges.
The House rewrote the bill. The new bill extends the time period for a vehicle owner to appeal the reasonableness of towing and impoundment, requires that invoices to clearly indicate the process for appealing, and prohibits the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) from suspending a person's license or driving privileges based on their failure to pay a debt related to a commercial entity's towing or storage of a vehicle.
The Senate also rewrote the bill. Their version of the bill extends deadlines for disputing towing and storage fees and requires invoices to include information on how to challenge charges. The bill also revises the procedures and processes for the list of contracted tow companies used by the State Police.
The House and Senate must agree on a final version of the bill.
