"I will begin by explaining why I have chosen to run. The path of my service has taken me to some of the darkest places on the planet, but no matter far into the darkness I ventured I could always look toward home to see light. With each passing day, thru the erosion of the intuitional and societal norms by the current administration I have watched that light fade. From the beginning of my career and even into retirement I was taught that my safety was dependent upon avoiding the spotlight, but with the attacks upon the press, the assassination of a journalist, and the granting of access to top secret information based upon personal relationships, I begin to see the personal safeties of more than just myself to be at risk. I will restore that safety for all as well as confidence in the government by serving the country as I have since 1997. You may not have known my name then, but you did trust me to keep you safe."
