Position on Issues

Citizens Count Issue Survey, 2024

Do you support the “Education Freedom Account” program, which gives students access to the per-pupil share of state school funding to spend on private school or home school expenses?

"I think low-income or special needs students who are not able to get their needs met in public schools deserve to have an alternative available, but oppose the attempt to expand the program to include wealthier families without special needs. Our duty as the public is to provide public schools. People have every right to opt out of public schools, but it is not our obligation to fund their choice, especially at the expense of those students remaining in the public schools. The state has underinvested in our public schools for a long time and responsible stewardship of tax dollars requires using that money to guarantee every student an adequate education, not to give a lucky few a leg up."

Do you support New Hampshire’s current system of public school funding, with about two-thirds of total funding coming from local property taxes?

"We should change the formula for adequate state educational aid, which is currently biased against lower-income districts such as Manchester's. The legislature should obey the court order requiring the state to actually provide constitutionally adequate education aid to every district."
