SB 11 (2023)
Require communication with descendants about historical African American graves
This bill became law.
Requires consultation with the descendants or descendant community prior to excavation or exploration of African American burial grounds. This bill also requires all New Hampshire educational or research institutions, museums, historical societies, and other collections to make "reasonable efforts" to inventory any remains or other materials from African American graves by June 30, 2028.
The House rewrote the bill, keeping most of the original intent but placing the law in a preexisting statute covering Native American graves. The House version of the bill also does not require an inventory process.
