SB 420 (2022)
Add funding for schools with low property values, high number of low income students
This bill became law.
Establishes an extraordinary need grant for schools in addition to regular adequate education grants and relief grants. The extraordinary need grants would be calculated based on a district's total property values divided by the number of students eligible for free and reduced price lunch.
The House amended the bill to also modify the state aid for special education students. Currently, the school funding formula provides each district $2,037 for each student who has an Individual Education Plan (IEP). This bill would increase that funding to $3,367 for children with some handicapping conditions. The House later removed this part of the bill due to cost concerns.
