SB 89 (2023)
Revise requirement for clerks to accommodate marriage licenses at different locations for medical reasons
This bill became law.
As introduced, this bill gave city and town clerks the power to decide whether or not to accommodate a person who is unable to appear in person for a marriage license due to medical reasons.
The Senate rewrote the bill. The amended bill requires a city or town clerk to accommodate parties unable to appear in person for a marriage license due to documented medical reasons, and allows electronic meetings for that purpose.
The House amended the bill to remove the option to meet electronically. A clerk may still accommodate parties with a documented medical issue by meeting in person at a different location.
