"I would not abolish ICE. I believe our immigration laws should be enforced and that noncitizens who commit serious crimes should be subject to deportation. However, I also believe ICE requires strong oversight and professional management. Recent enforcement operations and the agency's rapid expansion have raised serious concerns about training, vetting, supervision, and accountability. Being in the United States illegally should not put someone's life unnecessarily at risk. As with any law enforcement agency, ICE must carry out its responsibilities professionally, respect due process, and be held accountable when mistakes are made. More broadly, we need to determine what the regular, day-to-day responsibilities of the federal government should be and bring recurring spending and recurring revenues into balance. "I believe the February 28, 2026 decision to launch airstrikes against Iran was ill-advised and contributed to a predictable escalation, including Iran's disruption of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. However, now that the United States is involved in the conflict, I believe we must ensure that the Strait of Hormuz is open to international commercial shipping and that freedom of navigation is restored. I would prefer to achieve that objective through diplomacy, but I support the use of military force if necessary to protect freedom of navigation and reopen the Strait to commercial shipping. I do not support an open-ended war with Iran or the deployment of U.S. ground forces without a clearly defined and compelling national-security objective."
