2024 Presidential Primaries

Voting Date:

Democrat
Joe Biden (incumbent)
Democrat

U.S. President (2021 - present); U.S. Vice President (2008 - 2016); Senator, U.S. Senate (1972 - 2008)

In 2021 Joe Biden was the oldest American ever to be sworn in as president, at age 78. From day one of his presidency there was speculation he would step down for a younger Democrat rather than seek reelection. After Democrats outperformed expectations in the midterms, however, Biden supporters gained momentum. In April 2023 Biden announced he would run for reelection as president. He won New Hampshire's Democratic primary despite his name not appearing on the ballot after supporters organized a write-in campaign.

Dean Phillips
Dean Phillips
Democrat

Representative, U.S. House of Representatives (2018 - present); co-owner, Penny's Coffee (2016 - present); co-owner, Talenti gelato (2012 - 2014); president and CEO, Phillips Distilling Company (2000 - 2012)

Dean Phillips announced he was challenging president Biden for the Democratic nomination in October 2023. He said, "I think President Biden has done a spectacular job for our country. But it's not about the past. This is an election about the future. I will not sit still I will not be quiet in the face of numbers that are so clearly saying that we're going to be facing an emergency next November." Phillips has served three terms in the U.S. House of Representatives and is one of the wealthiest members of Congress, thanks to his successful business ventures. He lost to Biden in New Hampshire's Democratic primary.

Marianne Williamson
Marianne Williamson
Democrat

Author; political activist; founder, Los Angeles and Manhattan Centers for Living; founder, Project Angel Food; co-founder, The Peace Alliance

Williamson has been described as a self-help author, spiritual advisor, and activist. She criticizes Biden and other Democratic Party leaders for policies that favor wealthy donors over working class voters – including efforts to bump New Hampshire later in the presidential primary calendar. She suspended her campaign in early February, then "un-suspended" her campaign after the Michigan primary on February 27. She acknowledged her slim chances at victory but said, "something so much more important than the horse race is at stake here. And we must respond."

Republican
Nikki Haley
Nikki Haley
Republican

U.S. ambassador to the United Nations (2017 - 2018); governor, South Carolina (2011 - 2017); representative, South Carolina House of Representatives (2004 - 2010)

Nikki Haley served as governor of South Carolina and U.S. ambassador to the United Nations under president Trump. Her campaign announcement in February 2023 included a clear jab at both Trump and Biden: “America is not past our prime, it’s just that our politicians are past theirs.” Haley dropped out of the race after Super Tuesday in March 2024 but has not endorsed Donald Trump.

Donald Trump
Republican

U.S. President (2016 - 2020); Businessman; Television personality; Author; CEO, The Trump Organization; Chairman, Trump Hotels and Casino Resorts, Inc.

Shortly after the 2022 midterm election former president Donald Trump announced his third presidential campaign from Florida. Sticking with his previous campaign catchphrase, he said, “Our country was great. Our country is not great anymore.” He is a formidable campaign fundraiser, but not all Republicans are as enchanted with him as they were in the past. Still, he has emerged as the frontrunner, handily winning the New Hampshire Republican primary.

2024 NH Gubernatorial Primary

Democrat
Joyce Craig
Joyce Craig
Democrat

Morse officially announced his run for governor the same day Sununu announced his retirement.

Joe Lieberman to serving as Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the U.S. Department of Justice. She is also married to Jake Sullivan, President Biden's National Security Advisor. Colin Van Ostern is a former executive councilor and candidate for governor. He was the first Democrat to jump into the District 2 race after Rep. Kuster said she would not seek reelection. In his campaign announcement Van Ostern emphasized the threats to democracy, called for a national law protecting reproductive rights, and promised to "always look for common ground."

Andru Volinsky
Democrat

Executive Councilor (2016 - 2020); Attorney, Bernstein Shur

Andru Volinsky is a former executive councilor and gubernatorial candidate. He is currently fighting to reform the state's school funding system through the courts. Becky Whitley
Becky Whitley
Democrat

Senator, NH Senate (2020 - present); Disability rights lawyer; climate activist; child health policy specialist

Becky Whitley is a lawyer and a progressive leader in the state Senate. She successfully passed bills to expand legal protections for parents and young children. When she announced her campaign on Facebook she posted, "They say when you want something done right, ask a busy person. I say, ask a busy mom. That’s what I am. I’m running for Congress to cut through the chaos and actually get results for women, children, and hard-working Granite State families."

Republican
George Hansel
George Hansel
Republican

Mayor of Keene (2020 - 2024); Vice President, Filtrine Manufacturing

Former Keene Mayor George Hansel lost the District 2 Congressional Primary in 2022, but he had the support of Governor Chris Sununu. Hansel is a more moderate candidate than many of the Republicans considering a run in 2024. He told the Keene Sentinel, "I've never been one to run for public office for a vanity project. It's really to get things done. Along with just analyzing if that's the right personal decision for me, there's some analysis that goes into it, like, 'How can I be effective? And will I be effective to represent the constituents in CD2?'"

Vikram Mansharamani
Vikram Mansharamani
Republican

Founder & President, Kelan Advisors, LLC (2012 - present); lecturer, Harvard University (2017 - present); Board Member, Werner Enterprises (2021 - present); Board Member, Africa Opportunity Fund (2014 - 2019); lecturer, Yale University (2009 - 2017)

Vikram Mansharamani is an economist and author who ran in New Hampshire's 2022 U.S. Senate primary. His recent works include Think for Yourself: Restoring Common Sense in an Age of Experts and Artificial Intelligence and Boombustology: Spotting Financial Bubbles Before They Burst. Mansharamani brings a unique, more moderate perspective to politics, which could help him win over voters who supported Democrat Rep. Annie Kuster - but those qualities also might make it difficult to win far-right voters in a Republican primary. Mansharamani announced his campaign in April 2024.

Lily Tang Williams
Lily Tang Williams
Republican

That is why I am running for Congress."
